.SG Regulatory





1) What is .sg?

.SG is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Singapore.


2) Who can register for a .sg domain name and what are the special registration requirements/restrictions for .sg domain name?

Special requirements/restrictions for a .sg domain name are as below:-

  1. Local presence is required for domain admin contact; Internet Exchange can provide Customers the local contact service in Singapore for .sg and .com.sg. Please note that started from Jun 2007, domain name that using our local contact service is chargeable, the fee is USD10 per domain per year. 
  2. Registrant is require to appoint a local individual with a valid SingPass ID as the administrative contact. Or else, registrant may choose to subscribe to Internet Exchange proxy service.
  3. Internet Exchange currently offer .sg, .com.sg, .net.sg, .org.sg, .edu.sg and .per.sg.
Domain Suffix Usage
.sg

Applicable for all as long as the administrative contact has a valid Singapore postal address. A foreign applicant may apply for a .sg domain name with it appoints a local agent having a valid Singapore postal address as the Administrative Contact. Internet Exchange can provide Customers the local contact service in Singapore.

.com.sg

Applicable for companies and businesses, applicants must be a commercial entities inwhich either registered or are about to be registered with the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), IE Singapore or any professional body. A foreign company may apply for a .com.sg domain name if it has a representative in Singapore as the Administrative contact, which shall be a legal entity that is similarly registered by any of the afore-mentioned organizations, and is duly authorized by the foreign company to apply for the registration of the domain name. Internet Exchange can provide Customers the local contact service in Singapore.

.net.sg

Applicable for network providers and info-com operators in
Singapore, applicants must be (1) operating info-comm networks or providing info-comm services; and/or (2) providing data storage facilities or hosting services. Examples of such eligible registrants include holders of Info-Communications Development Authority (IDA) licenses, operators of data centres, web hosting service providers, providers of dedicated connectivity services and operators of value added networks.

.org.sg

Applicable for societies, charitable bodies and other
organizations not classified inwhich either
registered or are about to be registered with the Registry of
Societies (ROS) or other miscellaneous organizations (eg. Town Councils, Community Centres, People’s Association and Embassies and any other organizations not classified elsewhere.)

.edu.sg

Applicable for educational institutions, applicants must be educational institutions registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore.

per.sg

Applicable for registration of a personal domain names, an applicant for a .per.sg domain name must be a Singapore citizen or permanent resident who aged 18 years and above. Parents, guardians or an immediate family member shall apply on behalf of an applicant who is below 18 years of age, provided that the parent or guardian or the immediate family member concerned is above 18 years. A .per.sg domain name website may be used to carry out commercial activities for so long as it complies with any guidelines that SGNIC may from time to time issue in relation to the activities of .per.sg domain name name website.


Important notes

- Registry will contact domain admin directly to verify the registrant details in 21 calendar days from the registration date. Fail to do so will cause the domain be suspended.

- Domain admin will receive daily reminder until the registrant details have been verified. Verification status can be checked through WHOIS.

- Modification towards registrant details are subject to re-verification from the domain admin.

3) What is the length for .sg domain name?

Minimum of 2 / maximum of 63 characters allowed.


4) Are there any reserved or blocked .sg domain names?

The .sg Registry has reserved or blocked certain names. These include:

  • Name which contain words such as “Singapore”, Singapura”, “Singapore Government” or “President” and any other words that might suggest a link to the Government;
  • Names which contain “SGNIC”, “NIC” and variations;
  • Names which are obscene, scandalous, indecent or contrary to law or  morality (e.g. “sex” or any connotations with sex or any sex-related activities);
  • Names which are geographical names or names of countries (e.g. Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, etc.);
  • Names (either on their own or in combination with other characters) of existing generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) (i.e. .com, .org, .net, edu, .gov, .per, .aero, .coop, .biz, .info, .museum, .name and pro) and any other gTLDs created or to be created by ICANN in the future;
  • Name such as “www”, “https” or “http-www”;
  • Names which are similar or identical to domain names registered under other domain name space and which SGNIC deems undesirable;
  • Names which are set out in the RPPG to be reserved names of .per.sg;
  • Names consisting entirely of numerals; and
  • Names which in SGNIC’s sole and absolute opinion are undesirable or unsuitable for registration.

5) What is the term of registration?

The term of registration is 1, 2 years.


6) How do I perform a .sg domain registration?

Customers may register the domain name through Quick Start Registration function. Customer may refer to “Domain Registration” FAQ for more information.


7) Can I delete a domain after registered?

Yes, Customers are allowed to delete a .sg domain name after registered, registration fee is refundable within 3 days grace period.


8) What is the term of renewal?

The term of renewal is 1, 2 years.


9) What is the renewal grace period for .sg domain name and how do I perform a domain renewal?

Renewal grace period for .sg domain name is 29 days, Customers may renew the domain name through Quick Start Registration function. Customer may refer to “Domain Renewal” FAQ for more information.


10) Any Redemption Grace Period (RGP) for .sg domain name?

Yes, Redemption Grace Period for .sg domain name is a period of 30 days. Customer may refer to “Domain Restoration” FAQ for more information.


11) How long does it takes for a domain to release to public registration after expired and not renew?

After a .sg domain was expired, it will go through below life cycle:-

29 days renewal grace period -- > 30 days Redemption grace period --> No pending delete

If Customers did not renew or restore the domain name, it will be release for public re-registration approximately 60 days from the domain expiration date. Please note that domain re-registration is on first-come, first-served basis.


12) Can I initiate a registrar transfer for .sg domain name and how do I initiate the transfer?

Yes, Customers are allowed to initiate registrar transfer for .sg domain name.
Please note that domain will NOT extend for 1 year after completion.

13) How do I manage my .sg domain name for example, name protection, retrieve authorization information and etc.?

Customers may manage domain name through Management System.


14) Does Internet Exchange provide Internationalized Domain name (IDN) for .sg?

Yes, Internet Exchange do provide IDN.sg domain name in Chinese and Tamil.
